One-Upmanship
hmm... I just recently discovered the meaning of this word... and it got me thinking
looks like it's one of the basic human needs to feel superior in some aspect... One-Upmanship only brings this to extreme, when someone tries to keep that superiority in every aspect...
and.... feeling superior in some aspects... seems to be the basis of us feeling satisfied with ourselves...
question is: what aspects? .... and... what means superior?
obviously, we want to be superior (the best) in aspects of life which WE find most important... it could be physical strength, intelligence, humor, skill, kindness, etc.
So, it's very subjective what aspects are important...
other thing that is subjective is... what meens good, or better?... sometime it's obvious (like physical strength), and sometime it's not (like kindness or humor)
to summarize: to feel good about ourselves, we need to think of ourselves as better than others in areas of life that we think are important
................
downside is... well... superego...
'cause when we share our subjectivness with someone else... while we are superior and satisfied, the other one is not.... so, we need to be carefull in showing of superiority, in order to be friendly... (and maybe, that's just another aspect which we try to be better at ;) ...
another conclusion would be... we have to encourage diversity and subjectivity, 'cause that way, more of us will be happy their own way, with their own feel of superiority... :)
